Hakalau Beach Park

Last weekend I had a ‘free pass’ to go Christmas shopping all by myself. No kids and fancy-free, without emergency toilet stops, rolling-on-the-floor aka my-bones-just-melted tantrums and MommyWeHaveToEatWhateverCoolSnackThey’reEatingRIGHTNOW-type whining? I was stoked! So I don’t know why I took so long to leave the house and why I was eager to get home. Maybe I knew something was up. I returned home earlier than expected and was delighted to crash my family’s improptu drive to Hakalau Beach Park, about a 20-30 minute drive North of Hilo:

The sugar cane is in bloom! Flanking Highway 19.

Past the old Hakalau Mill and on our way down to the beach.

Under the bridge, looking upstream. Although the sugar mill has been closed for decades, the stream is still quite littered with bagasse.

I took too many bridge photos. Here’s one.

We sat near the base of the bridge and collected the beach glass living among the pebbles and sand.

More sugar cane as we headed home.

Blogger fail! Didn’t take any photos of the beach. Or the park. But I enjoyed my family while we quietly hung out near the stream. It was a beautiful respite from the hustle and bustle of the holiday season.
